Workshop Instructor Greg Kono
I have been teaching kite making workshops and collaborating with the Drachen Foundation since 2002. I am based in Seattle, Washington and have conducted workshops locally, nationally and internationally with K-12 students, community groups (youth and adults), university students, artists and educators. Visit my profile page to view a list of some of my workshops.
Length of Workshop
Length of Workshop: A typical workshop lasts 1.5 to 2 hours. Times vary depending on subject matter and opportunities for flying. In K-12 settings, some workshops can fit into a school period (45-50 minutes) if students decorate their kite sails in advance. E-mail greg@konodesign.com with any questions.
Sample Schedule:
| Introduction/Overview to Kite Making |
.25 hour |
| Art Decoration |
.25 - .5 hour |
| Construction Time |
.75 - 1 hour |
| Flying Time/Tuning (site and weather permitting) |
.25 hour |
| Total |
1.5 - 2 hours |
Number of Students
For in-school, after-school or community workshops I can instruct up to 30 students per session. Note: In K-12 settings, or in community workshops for children up to age 14, the organizer must provide an adult volunteer for every 6 students.
Workshop Space Requirements
6 square feet (2’ x 3’) of workspace per student is generally enough room for building most kites offered. Some kites require glue, a work surface suitable for gluing and a sink for clean-up are required for those kites.
Types of Workshops
Check out the Drachen Foundation kites in the classroom webpage for K-12 lessons to match specific kite making projects.
